Omi chat answers questions using what Omi knows about you. It is one assistant shared across the phone app, the Mac app, and the notch.

How a question is answered

  1. Decide whether context is needed. Greetings and general questions get a direct answer. Questions about you, your past, or your connected services go to the agent.
  2. Gather context with tools. The agent decides which tools to call: search conversations by meaning or date, look up memories and action items, or read connected sources such as your calendar. It can call several tools before answering.
  3. Answer with citations. The reply streams back as it is written, with citations that link to the conversations it used.
Relative dates like “last Tuesday” are resolved in your time zone before any search runs.

Apps in chat

Apps can extend chat in two ways:
  • Chat tools let the agent call your service while answering. See Chat tools.
  • Persona apps answer in a character’s voice with their own prompt and a limited set of tools. See Prompt-based apps.

Limits that protect you

The agent caps how many tools it calls for one question and how long it waits on external services, so a single question cannot run away. It reads only your account’s data and the sources you connected.
Routing code, the full tool list, prompts, and model choices live next to the code in backend/docs/chat-system.md.
